The project involved alterations and refurbishment to a 1970’s mews style property situated within a conservation area in the London Borough of Islington.

The brief for the project was to add an additional bedroom and utility room along with a larger kitchen and dining space. Improving thermal efficiency was also a key component of the brief.

Due to the location and plot size there was no scope for an extension therefore the existing garage space has been used to increase the size of the kitchen and add a utility room, bike and bin store. Additional storage space has been added by cladding the existing stairwell in a walnut veneer creating several different cupboards over the 3 levels of the property. Four opening roof lights have been added to the top of the staircase to provide natural stack ventilation in the summer while also introducing natural light down into the house. The detailing and chose of materials have been chosen to evoke the 70’s style of the property.

The existing garage door has been replaced with a perforated metal screen and pass door giving ventilation and access to the bin and bike store. The folded profile provides relief to the flat facade. The external walls have been insulated and the single glazed windows replaced with triple glazing, this, along with a new heating system has ensured that the thermal efficiency of the house has been vastly improved.
